Mary Price brings the creativity to Kilnfusion Studio. A native of Central New York, Mary opened her studio in 2013 full time. She is largely a self taught artist, working with glass for over 20 years.
Fused, or kilnformed glass differs from blown glass in that all of the heat work is in done in a kiln, rather than on a pipe with a furnace.
The fusing process involves heating the glass designs in a specialized kiln to temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees. Each piece is heated several times, and each time spends around 24 hours in the kiln. This is due to the specific properties of glass that require very slow heating and cooling to prevent thermal shock, or cracking. Certain glasses must be used to create fused pieces, they have gone through special testing at the manufacturer to ensure compatablity.
